at Ski Klub of Indy
17 skiers
participated in the MD Boats NSL/Grassroots Tournament held at Ski Klub of
Indianapolis on Sunday, August 10th. All enjoyed good weather, goodie bags,
t-shirts, trophies, and burgers from the grill. Top skier of the day was Jeff
Myers from Wabash, Indiana. "Best crash of the day" went to Neil Clark of
Frankfort, Indiana. Next NSL/Grassroots event will be held Tuesday night at
Cindonway Shores August 26th and on Labor Day weekend Sept. 1st. Pictures from

Scores By State at Regionals
Illinois held the lead for most of the weekend and in fact held it with just a
few events left but in the end the hoosier state took the title. Illinois took
2nd while far traveled Ohio took 3rd. Minnesota gets the award for the most
skiers with 54.

More Award to Mention
Briant Detty had won the Correct Craft Ski Nautique Award which is given
to a competitor competing in the Girls 1-3 or Boys 1-3 divisions at the Midwest
Regional Championships with the highest overall NOPS score. B'ster slalomed 2 @
35 off for second place, tricked 1430 points for 2nd place and jumped a110 for a
first place finish which gave him an overall score of 3189.1 for a first place
in overall as well.

Other Midwest
Regional Tournament records set over the weekend at Mystic Lakes in Maize Kansas
were Sam Jackson with his slalom score of 5.25 at 35 off for a new Boys 2
record, and Cale Burdick 's slalom score of 4 at 39 off for a new Open Men
record.

Skiers at Regionals

There are many great performances to
report about from the Midwest Regionals which was held over the weekend in
Wichita Kansas. One of the most notable was Briant Detty's new Boys 2 record
in jump. B'ster was at it again when he jumped another 110 to overtake the
record which was held by Dennis Hammontree since 1975, one of the oldest

Championship Results and Highlights
Again as Usual the Hawthorn Ski Club and it's residents put on a great State
Tournament and played excellent host to 85 skiers. The weather was
perfect, the skiing was exceptional, definitely a no excuse weekend. The banquet

River Back in Action

INDY SKIERS
are finally back on the river. They held learn to ski events on Thursday,
July 17th and Saturday July 19th. Installing and maintaining a tournament
ski course on White River has been a challenge this season with high water
and strong currents. The new IWSA-RHI Sports Wheelchair ramp has been installed
and (pictured here) tested by Dan Reed who rolled down the ramp and called
it a smooth transition from landing to dock, due to the
engineering prowess of members Jerry Hodges and Charles Edwards. This ramp
was funded in part by the IWSA and has been a great addition for the
disabled clinics and events."
On Saturday Indy Skiers hosted two disabled women from
Louisville, a mom and son from Indy, and 2 Municipal Gardens youth
basketball players in our first Community Learn to Ski Day. There's a few pics

7/18/08 Div. II Show Ski
Nationals Comes to Warsaw
The eighth annual Division 2 Show Ski National
Championships will be held Aug. 2-3 in Warsaw, Ind. Hosted by the Lake
City Skiers, the tournament is expected to feature more than 500 athletes
competing for the coveted Division 2 show ski national title. Lake City
Skiers hosted this tournament last year which they have won two
consecutive years.
In competitive show skiing, each club has one hour to
present a theatrical performance on water skis. Judges score the acts by
awarding points |

based on originality, presentation and execution. Elaborate costumes and staging
intermix with music and fast action on the water as an announcer leads the
audience through the show. The Division 2 Show Ski National Championships also
features athletes competing individually in adagio doubles, swivel and

Tournament Info
The cut off date for this years regional's is July 17th. Anyone ranked level 6
in S,T,J or Overall, except Men's 3 or 4 slalom which must be level 7, the
morning of the 17th, are qualified for the Mid West Regionals. The web site for

The entry deadline is Friday July 25th. Beware that's the Friday before most
state tournaments. So if you think you might qualify at state or otherwise , to

Much thanks to Champion Lake for
hosting the first "Guest Night" for 6 grassroots level skiers on June
24th. Hats off to Kevin Smith, Nate Smith, Debbie Ruddick, and Kim Black

Breaks Regional Record After Big Rig
|
The Big Rig Jump Clinic must have performed it's magic.
For one jumper anyway. After spending the day with Chris Travers, of Jack
Travers Ski School from Florida, at the Big Rig Jump Clinic at Hawthorn
Lake, Briant Detty know around the lake as B'ster, not only performed a
personal best at the Hawthorn Record tournament after the clinic on the same
lake, also set a new Boys 2 Regional jump record of 113 feet, exceeding the
old record by 10 feet. Congratulations B'ster. Hawthorn Tournament

Clinics
Ten advanced Jr. Skiers received top
notch instruction from famous Chris Travers of Florida on day 2 of the
IWSA's Jr. Development Clinics. This was a great way to get the latest in
coaching techniques from an advanced instructor on our home lakes for our
younger skiers seeking advancement. Chris was great with the kids and
everyone came away with some technique improvements. These Jr clinics are
always a great success and couldn't

Eleven youngsters took
instruction from John Kniesly on day 1 of IWSA's Junior Development Clinic at
Hawthorn Lake on June 25. This years clinic offered 3 sets of instruction
to youngsters in the interest of growing the sport. Carl Truesdale, Carla
Stornetta and Debbie Ruddick operated the registration desk and dock duties.

10 Trick skiers enjoyed the glassy waters
of Hawthorn Lake on June 24th. Three sets of instruction were offered by
Rhonda Schmitt and Scott Schmitt of Timberlake Ski Club. Sam Schmitt
brought his new black "gangster" Mastercraft from Timberlake for the event.
Participants came away with personally written notes on new techniques to
practice at their home sites. Thanks to the Dettys for use of the
waterfront at their beautiful home on Hawthorn Lake. This clinic is always
great for beginners to advanced. A great successful event for trick skiers,

6/23/08 Nate Smith Wins
US
Jr. Open
|
Nate Smith won the Jr. US Open Slalom event in West
Chester , OH over the weekend. Nate after going to Sawmill to get some
practice with Zero Off Thursday night hit a magnet and destroyed his fin.
With no time to get a new fin, Mr. Tom Jackson of Sawmill gave Nate a D3 fin
for his Connelly ski. Off to the Jr. Open they go with Nate only to get one
practice set on his new set up. Going into the event Nate was top seed.
After Saturday preliminary's Nate fell behind Adam Sedlmajer from Czech
Republic to second seed with a score of 2 -1/2 @ 38 off. Nate in the finals
now second seed ran his 38 off and 1 @ 39 topping Adams 5 @ 38 off to take
the Jr. Open Slalom Title. Something tells us we haven't heard the end of
Nate Smith. Congratulations Nate.

6/22/08 Wisdom Lake NSL
The first NSL/GRASSROOTS
event of the summer was complimented by perfect weather. Duane Keillor and
Carrie Fong rolled out the welcome mat at their new Wisdom Lake development
near Greensburg, Indiana. 16 skiers from Ohio and Indiana enjoyed their
hospitality and smooth water. Carrie provided a three course lunch for all!.
The tournament ended with an exciting "run-off" between the two top contenders
Jeff Myers and Neal Clark. Neal won the run off to take top honors. We all

Water Ski Tour Stop #3
After all said and done, Scott Tynan falls to Ben Favret in the finals of the
MasterCraft Pro Water Ski Tour Stop # 3. Scott was good enough to take the 2nd
place prize at this weekends 3rd stop.
Home town favorite Cale Burdick finished with a respectable 3rd place prize
behind only Nick Parsons and first place Will Asher.

MasterCraft Pro Water Ski Tour at Lake Jepawhit in Gains Township Michigan.

After the first round of the men's 36 preliminary round, Cale Burdick is in a 5

Breaks Records at Sawmill
Sam Jackson of Sawmill Lake in Columbus ran 1 1/2 @ 38' off in the Boys 2
division at the Sawmill Spring Record on 6/14/2008 in Columbus, IN. The old Boys
2 Regional record at record capability tournaments was 4 1/2 @ 35' off and at
all Midwest Region tournaments was 5 @ 35' off. Sam now holds these records with

Monday Night Ski at Fairland
Our second Monday Night Ski League of
the season went like clockwork! Gary Hall and Brian Detty conducted the
driving part of the driver's clinic while pulling Monday Night Ski League
participants. Each set had a new driver and a new skier. Wind and high water
made both driving and skiing a bit of a challenge but when the skiers were
offered a second free set......the line formed! Special thanks to Mark
Qualkinbush, Gary Baumann, and John Kniesly for officiating. Our next Monday
Night Ski League will be July 7th.

RHI Sports Update

Another
successful RHI Handicapped event occurred on June 4th and 5th at Red Bridge
Park on Morse Reservoir. A rainy Wednesday morning developed into a
beautiful afternoon followed by a sunny Thursday. Numerous skiers enjoyed
multiple pulls, picnicing, and visiting with friends. The volunteers,
staff, boat dealers, and family helpers are too numerous to list.

8th Annual Spring Fling
The weather man cooperated and
produced a picture perfect day for the 2008 Spring Fling held at the
Fairland Ski Club on June 1st. 24 water skiers and 12 wakeboarders took
turns on the lake. Meanwhile on shore, burgers were popping off the grill
and drinks were coming out of the coolers. Boat displays by Pine Crest
Marine, Aqua Marine, N-3
Boatworks were enjoyed by all. Skiing and wakeboarding equipment and
apparel were available from Skier's Edge and the new Pro Shop from Morse
Lake Inboard's new sport
shop owners. Thanks to the

The 5th Annual Arbor Homes Golf

5/23/08 Collegiate
All Stars and Team Trials
|
Last weekend - 5/16-18 the Purdue Ski
Team along with the Southern Illinois University Water Ski Team pulled off
another highly successful prestigious Water Skiing event in DuQuoin Ill.
Here IWSA's collegiate representatives and event organizers Cale Burdick and
Abby Schmitt conduct business at the events banquet. One officials comment "
I really think they set the bar pretty high for next years event."
- "Great organization, lots of planning,
and a group of outstanding volunteers made everything go easy." One comment
- " I couldn't believe how many Schmitt's were involved." This says a lot to
the group of volunteers as well as our young organizers coming up in the
sport. |

The Midwest Region won the Collegiate All-Stars Water Ski Championships on
Sunday, tallying 10,450 points at the 14th annual event. The Western Region
finished runner-up, scoring 9,315 points, followed by the Eastern (3,625
points) and South Central (2,540 points) regions.
The Collegiate All-Stars Water Ski Championships includes the top-10 men and
top-10 women from each of the National Collegiate Water Ski Association's four
regions vying for titles in slalom, tricks, jumping and overall. A team title
also is awarded to the top-scoring region.
Purdue's Cale Burdick won titles in men's slalom and jumping, and tied for the
overall title. It was the fourth consecutive year that Burdick won the men's
slalom title at the All-Stars.

Clinic a Success
The
2008 safety clinic was attended by 17 water skiers from Indiana, Kentucky,
Ohio and Michigan. Participates represented 3-event, wakeboarding and
barefooting and 15 students were attending their first safety clinic. Held
at Avon High School, instruction included Adult CPR training, basic first
aid, water rescue, and placing an injured skier on a backboard. This is
always one of the best safety clinics you could attend whether you plan to
be on the water or not. Look for it again next year...

It has been
announced that IWSA's Nate Smith has been invited to ski the most
prestigious tournament in Water skiing, the Jr. Masters. The Masters
Committee has released the list of invitees to the 16th Junior Masters Water
Ski and Wakeboard Tournament, which will be held along with the 49th Masters
Tournament May 23-25 at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain Ga.
The Jr. Masters feature the world's top 17 year old and under in
competition. Nate Currently is third in the jr. world rankings in slalom.

It has been announced that Nate Smith
from McCordsville Indiana is currently ranked 3rd in the world ranking list
in Jr. Mens slalom with 1.5 buoys at 39.5 off. Nate sits out of second place
by only a half buoy which is held by Zach Warden. Nate , won the boys 3
national slalom title this past season in Bakersfield California with
a score of 1.5 at 39.5 off. 1st place is held by Sacha Descuns of France
with a few more buoys of 1.5 at 41 off. At the young age of 17 Nate, who also holds an
assistant drivers rating has plenty of more time to tear up the junior ranks
and add more titles to his belt. Congratulations Nate Smith.

WINS Worlds!

Cale takes the gold
medal with 4.5 buoys at 39 off Saturday in men's slalom as the Under 21 Water
Ski World Championships continued in San Bernardo, Chile. Cale was seeded 1st
from the preliminary round so he got to ski last having to beet the best score
at the time of 4 at 39 off by Jonathan Travers. Word is Cale skied just outside
of 5 ball and stood up to take the first place medal at his first World Under 21
Tournament. Cale has accomplished just about everything at this point in his
skiing career. What's next? |

On Thursday, U.S.
independent Cale Burdick of Danville, Ind., earned the top seed for the
finals of men’s slalom, scoring 3-1/2 buoys at 39-1/2 feet off in the
preliminary round. He was the only athlete to run the 38 off pass. U.S.
independent Jonathan Travers of Groveland, Fla., and team member Storm Selsor
of Fremont, Calif., also advanced to the finals, scoring 3-1/4 buoys at 38
feet off and 3 buoys at 38 feet off, respectively.The Under 21 Water
Ski World Championships continued Thursday in San Bernardo, Chile, with a
handful of U.S. athletes advancing to finals |

respective events. Four U.S. water ski
athletes are competing as members of the U.S. Under 21 Water Ski Team at the
biennial event, while three others are competing as U.S. independents. Athletes
